Shimano have, in a quintessentially Japanese way, been patiently refining their reels for over 80 years to be the best in Japan and the world stage. It shows in the Calcutta, which is a mid-range freshwater reel in the Shimano line that knocks its competitors out of the park on a consistent basis.
This is an ideal meeting of price, quality and dependability in the Shimano product range. The Calcutta 400B has a forged aluminium frame and anti-rust bearings, making its main structure rugged and appropriate for rough conditions. Specially treated ball bearings are corrosion-resistant, and its variable brake system uses centrifugal force to help the angler control their cast - maximum distance and adjustability are easily achieved as a result.
There's a wide range of drag settings available on the Calcutta, making it very smooth in the hand during use. It's easy to take apart too, thanks to the quick take down design making it as simple as unscrewing three thumb screws on the side plate.
Our opinion: There's a lot to love about the Calcutta 400B, and it's a great choice for an angler with a modest budget. Its features make it capable for any modern or classic fishing style, and its strong construction makes it a reliable go-to reel for freshwater or saltwater.
If you've got a reasonable budget and want a reel you can turn to confidently most of the time, this is a good one to consider. It's from a great brand, it kicks butt and it's reasonably priced. Great stuff.
